Major cities/towns: Minsk, Brest, Grodno, Gomel, Mogilev and Vitebsk. Over 42% of Belarus’ land area is covered by forest. Three major rivers run through the country are: the Neman, the Pripyat and the Dnieper. In addition, there are over 11,000 lakes and streams in Belarus.

Political Structure: Belarus is a Presidential Republic.  Under the Constitution in force since 27 November 1996, the President is the Executive Head of the State and the guarantor of the Constitution. President Alexander Lukashenko has been re-elected for the sixth term in August 2020.  The President nominates the Prime Minister and the Parliament approves or rejects the nomination.  The bicameral National Assembly (Parliament) consists of 110 Members’ House of Representatives (Lower House) and 64 Members’ Council of the Republic (Upper House).
